J. Maré Annual Founder’s Award

“Kindness is being in solidarity with human need.”  –Phillips & Taylor, 2009

After the death of her son Ben in 2002, Jeannette Maré learned how a small act of kindness could make such a difference in a person’s life, no matter their background. She created the Ben’s Bells Project as a way to spread kindness in the community and teach others about the impact of intentional kindness. Jeannette and her family and friends made four hundred Bells and randomly distributed them in the Tucson community on the first anniversary of Ben’s death. This started a powerful ripple effect, and since 2003 Ben’s Bells has been operating as a nonprofit, growing kindness education programs and continuing to distribute thousands of Bells every year. In 2019, Jeannette transitioned from the role of Executive Director to Chief Kindness Officer. This award was established in 2022 during our 20th year of service to honor kind individuals in the community for making a difference through their outstanding kindness.

NOMINATIONS: We are seeking nominations of people in the Tucson area who embody kindness through their behavior, choices, and actions, and through their service to the community. These kind individuals understand that kindness is a powerful skill and ongoing practice that begins inwardly and extends to other individuals, groups, and entire communities. Kindness is often misunderstood to mean behavior that keeps order, or makes people comfortable (what we call ‘niceness’). A Ben’s Bells Founder’s Award honoree will be someone who actively works for community equity and inclusiveness. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. expressed the danger of niceness when he wrote that the greatest stumbling block to freedom is the person “…who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice.”

Nominate a kind individual today! Submissions due by Friday, April 1st.
